Reading #5: Crowdsourcing and Participative Systems

Question 1 on Crowdsourcing:

In the article, Crowdsourcing: The art of a crowd, Andrea Grover mentions at the end, "Without a strong structure, the result can be chaotic, mediocre, or trivial". Are there examples of crowdsourced art that failed badly? In this type of work there is an inherent risk to let go at a certain point for other to participate and make it come to be. Where is the line between structure and letting go? Is there a formula for success?

Question 2 on Participative Systems:

On page 117, the author discusses the common language and vocabulary necessary for conversation in relation to the complex system that is participative art. It seems that throughout the article, there is more discussion of the interdisciplinary nature of this kind of work. Do we see more artists with art backgrounds doing this kind of work or has there been an increase of artists with varied backgrounds outside of art? Do we see more collaborations between artists with vastly different backgrounds and if so, how does this further develop the language and vocabulary?
