Assignment #4: Sound

Here is the sound file for the transition animation that was incorporated into the larger exquisite corpse:

  nature + manmade by lisa.kurt

As I was thinking about what I wanted for sound for my animation incorporated with the low drone, I went back to my original concept and questions regarding the intersections of nature, science, culture and machines and technology. The drone was already providing a machine-like sound- even a technology related sound. I had highlighted pieces of the book that had inspired my initial idea, Science is Culture and I wanted to incorporate the readings into the piece. The challenge was that I didn't want the reading to dominate- I wanted it to be layered and be more of a texture- integrating into the piece rather than detracting or illustrating it. So I read twice and recorded each- I adjusted various levels so that it was more textural than spoken word. I incorporated thunder and rain sounds, in addition to a sound of a record player playing noise- it is a sound I have always found comforting because of the invokation of nostalgia and warmth in it's ambient and textured noise. I also thought it was a sound that is produced my a manmade object- a machine, but one that is considered mostly dated and old fashioned. This is an interesting layer and observation where often technology is presented in a very sleek and new way - at one point the record player was an innovation. All of these layers together are what you hear and they work in conjunction with the layers of the piece- entering and exiting through the timeline of the animation.
